From the 12th of January 2024 the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), regulatory body for the veterinary profession in the UK, has introduced new guidance on prescribing prescription-only medicines. The full guidance can be found on:
https://www.rcvs.org.uk/setting-standards/advice-and-guidance/under-care-new-guidance/
The new guidance requires that a physical examination of the pet has to be performed every time any antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals & antiparasiticides are prescribed. This includes preparations such as ear & eye drops, and all prescription flea, worm & tick products.
The guidance is an important step towards ensuring responsible antimicrobial use & reducing the veterinary impact on the wider issues of global antibiotic resistance & decline of insect populations.
Our vets must abide by the regulations which apply to all vets in the UK, and it may mean that we will ask you to bring your animal for a physical examination at least every 12 months. Therefore, we may not be able to automatically dispense the medication you wish to order.
We recognise that this new regulation will represent a significant change for our clients as well as the Crossways team. Therefore, to ease the transition & minimise the cost impact on our clients as far as possible, we have introduced some special arrangements that our staff will explain.
